Restoring the Hackley Public Library Mosaic: A Masterclass in Historic Stone Floor Preservation

When we began restoring the mosaic floor at the Hackley Public Library in Muskegon, Michigan, we uncovered more than just a damaged work of art—we unearthed a rich piece of history waiting to be preserved. This hand-cut stone mosaic, a stunning feature of the historic library, had suffered decades of wear and structural instability. Despite its condition, its beauty and cultural significance were undeniable.

At Marion Restoration, we believe that historic preservation is more than just a technical endeavor; it’s about safeguarding a connection to the past. In 2019, our team had the honor of restoring this historic mosaic, meticulously addressing both its structural and aesthetic challenges. Our work ensured that this timeless piece would continue to inspire and educate for generations to come.

The Historic Significance of the Hackley Public Library Mosaic

Mosaics have been used for centuries to enhance public spaces, combining artistry with cultural identity. The Hackley Public Library mosaic is a perfect example of this tradition. Constructed from hand-cut stone tesserae, the mosaic reflects a level of craftsmanship that speaks to its historical significance.

Unfortunately, years of wear and tear had taken a toll. A mortar patch had been applied over a lacuna (a missing section of tessellatum), hiding deeper damage to the preparatory layers below. These foundational layers, including the nucleus and bedding layers, had deteriorated, resulting in an uneven and unstable surface. Mineral deposits, known as incrustations, had formed on the mosaic’s surface, and holes left behind by a removed radiator further compromised the structure.

Faced with these challenges, our team was determined to not only restore the mosaic’s appearance but also address the underlying issues to ensure its longevity.

Mosaic floor Restoration Step-by-Step Process

Restoring the mosaic required meticulous planning, expert craftsmanship, and strict adherence to internationally recognized conservation principles, including guidelines outlined by the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics (ICCM), which emphasize documentation, material compatibility, and minimally invasive and reversible restoration techniques to ensure long-term preservation. For more information on ICCM’s guidelines, refer to their resources on the conservation of mosaics available at ICCM Mosaic Resources. Our team approached the project in several key phases, ensuring every detail was addressed with precision.

Step 1: Mapping the Mosaic

We began by creating a detailed map of the mosaic’s layout, tracing its intricate design onto plastic sheeting. This step allowed us to document the grand design, every individual tessera, and areas of damage.

Once we began removing tesserae, each piece was carefully cataloged and placed on a corresponding paper map. This ensured that every tessera could be reinstalled in its exact original position, preserving the mosaic’s historical accuracy.

Step 2: Removing and Salvaging Tesserae

Using our map as a guide, we carefully removed damaged and detached tesserae from the mosaic. Pieces that were unsalvageable were documented for replacement, while reusable tesserae were preserved for reintegration. In total, we identified 9,500 tesserae that required custom fabrication to match the original materials, colors, and textures.

Step 3: Restoring the Preparatory Layers

The preparatory layers beneath the tessellatum had suffered significant deterioration, leading to an unstable foundation. To restore these layers, we repaired the nucleus and bedding layers, filling voids and stabilizing the mosaic’s base. This process was crucial to creating a level and durable surface for the tesserae.

Additionally, we addressed holes left by the former radiator, ensuring the structural integrity of the entire mosaic.

Step 4: Cleaning the Mosaic Surface

Cleaning was a delicate but essential part of the restoration process. We removed incrustations and mineral deposits using non-abrasive techniques, revealing the vibrant colors and intricate patterns hidden beneath years of buildup. This step not only restored the mosaic’s aesthetic appeal but also prepared the surface for reinstallation.

Step 5: Reinstalling the Mosaic

Reinstallation was the final and most intricate phase of the project. Some sections of tesserae were reassembled off-site using our mapping process and relaid in larger segments, while others were carefully installed one by one. Custom-fabricated tesserae were seamlessly integrated into the original design, ensuring a cohesive and historically accurate restoration.

The Results: A Mosaic Restored to Its Former Glory

Thanks to our team’s expertise and dedication, the Hackley Public Library mosaic has been restored to its original brilliance. Its vibrant colors and intricate patterns now serve as a focal point of the library, inviting visitors to admire its craftsmanship and history.

But this restoration was about more than aesthetics. By addressing the structural issues beneath the mosaic, we ensured its stability and durability for years to come. For us, the project was a chance to preserve a piece of Muskegon’s history while showcasing the power of careful, respectful restoration.
