Project description:
During the course of our latest visit to investigate conditions at the 314 S. Charles St. property it was apparent that the construction of certain piers had contributed to mortar deterioration. The joint beneath some capstones was unusually large, subjecting the mortar to excessive stresses. With no overhang, the capstone did not provide any protection for the masonry, further contributing to its vulnerability. Marion Restoration has lifted those capstones and reset them on a thin bed of mortar. We have also repointed any joints showing signs of deterioration (we used a slightly stronger mortar (a natural hydraulic lime mortar) to better stand up against the erosive conditions presented in this case).
